Jobs on the rise worldwide in cryptocurrency and blockchain

The number of jobs in cryptocurrency and blockchain grew more than 200% in the US in 2017.  (https://www.coindesk.com/blockchains-big-year-competitive-job-market-grows-200/) In 2018, with the number of new businesses in the market, the demand for talent is skyrocketing.  Blockchain jobs are currently the second fastest growing segment in the labour market in the US according to Techcrunch. Developers are particularly in demand, with an estimated 14 open positions for every one blockchain developer.

There are some initiatives capitalising on this increase in demand for blockchain and crypto skills.  Upwork, a freelance marketplace, saw the demand in this space rise to the fastest growing skillset out of more than 5,000 skills. In the last quarter of 2017, it had over 2000 posts for blockchain related jobs.  Toptal, a marketplace for on-demand tech talent launched their blockchain engineering talent vertical in February this year.  LinkedIn has said that they have seen 28 times more people citing cryptocurrency skills since October 2013.  The world’s first cryptocurrency recruitment agency, Cryptorecruit set up shop in late 2017.

Roles in blockchain and cryptocurrency can pay a premium. The median income for a blockchain engineer in the US $130,000 a year compared to $105,000 for general software developers according to Burning Glass Technologies.  In some regions incomes can be even higher.  In Switzerland, for example, developers earn $120,000 to $180,000 per year.

How can you be a part of this? Whilst many companies would ideally like experience in blockchain, many will take on developers with great coding experience for example in C++, Python and Java Script.  There are many online courses teaching blockchain development skills. Many of these new businesses also need more general skill sets - such as sales, marketing and finance.
